Tortoise Rock Casino opens to fanfare, capacity crowd

A capacity crowd of more than 1,000 people filled the Tortoise Rock Casino for its grand opening Monday, March 31.

Anticipation was high, with visitors lined up along the building waiting for the doors to open to the public at 5 p.m. The grand opening included live entertainment, a commemorative gaming chip was also available for purchase. The casino is owned by the Twentynine Palms Band of Mission Indians, who have been refining their plans for about seven years. “We build it with the locals in mind. … We’re going to be keeping our prices down, make it affordable and relaxing for the community,” said Tortoise Rock Casino General Manager Tom Sedlock.

Tortoise Rock Casino is located near Joshua Tree National Park and the United States Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center. The 30,000 square foot casino offers more than 490 Vegas style slot machines and seven table games that include Blackjack and Poker. It also includes with live music and drinks at Shelly’s Lounge and offers casual dining at the Oasis Grille.

Tortoise Rock Casino will employ more than 150 full and part-time employees.
